Have never used MySQL before. Downloaded from MySQL site and have run the installer for x86. Installation always fails at security settings with this message in the logs:

Beginning configuration step: Applying security settings
Attempting to update security settings.
Authentication to host 'localhost' for user 'root' using method 'mysql_native_password' failed with message: Access denied for user 'root'@'localhost' (using password: NO)
Ended configuration step: Applying security settings

I have assigned a password for root on the previous screen. the account I'm using for installation has admin privileges.

I have tried uninstalling all MySQL artifacts several times but get the same result each time.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi

When running MySQL Installer I get the following Check Requirements not being met:

MySQL for Visual Studio 1.2.6 - Visual Studio version 2010, 2012, 2013 or 2015 must be installed.

I have Visual C# 2010 Express installed. Do I need to delete this and install Visual Studio 2015?

Thanks.

Cannot Create Catalog Update Task (no replies)

Since upgrading to Windows 10 I have been unable to create the scheduled task that runs the catalog update for MySQL Installer. I can run the catalog update manually, but cannot create the scheduled task, either when installing/configuring MySQL Installer or manually using the task scheduler in Windows.

I tried running the command manually as "C:\Program Files (x86)\MySQL\MySQL Installer for Windows\MySQLInstallerConsole.exe update" and I got an access violation where the file "C:\ProgramData\MySQL\MySQL Installer for Windows\settings-Community.xml" could not be accessed. I tried the same command line again using an administrative command prompt and it worked.

Obviously, something is wrong with the permissions in task scheduler. I have tried using my Administrator account and the System account to create the task, as well as checking the "Run with highest privileges" box in the task creation dialog. Nothing seems to work. Any help will be appreciated. I am getting this behavior on two separate PCs, one running Windows 10 Home 64 and the other running Windows 10 Pro 64. Each one has its own local installation of MySQL.

Redistribute MYSQL Server (2 replies)

We want to redistribute the basic MySQL server. In the past we have used mysqlsetup.msi but I could not find that. I tried downloading the MySQL for devs, but I could not find a single file to install the Windows MY SQL server.

What is the best installer? Also, what are the pre-requisites, or is there an installer that includes everything? We are using this in our .NET app.

Here are the parameters I was using in the past:
Process.Start("msiexec.exe", "/i " & Chr(34) & Application.StartupPath & "\setup\MySQLSetup.msi" & Chr(34) & " /qr INSTALLDIR=" & Chr(34) & Application.StartupPath & "\MySQL" & Chr(34)).WaitForExit()

Firstly let me say that I have been in IT for 40 plus years, so yes I'm an old coot. That said, a highly experienced one from 80's IBM Mainframes down to today's servers and PC's. Operating system core dumps to coding.

I have recently had to fiddle with mySQL as necessity rather that a choice.

I cannot believe what a crock of rubbish this is !

The bugs, the problems installing and configuring, not seeing databases, upgrade issues, on and on it goes. Unbelievable.

I have just spent the past 5 days trying to recover from upgrading from a working 5.6 to a mess of a 5.7 and still no luck.

In diagnosing the issues along the way, I have discovered that the "error checking" of mySQL is a joke to say the least.

Ridiculous error messages thrown up that are quite meaningless, that have many entries in Google from people all over the world over several years, and no one really knows what they are saying or doing or how to solve these issues. Predominantly because the documentation is poor, as is the error check processes.

Examples,

a)
I uninstalled 5.7 however it left the folder behind with nothing much in it. On attempting to reinstall, the Installer says Welcome Back and does not allow one to actually install 5.7 Poor.

b)
Service not starting. Well I think that is about all I need to say based on what I have read around the web. So many people have had this problem.
I finally discovered that if the Data folder was missing a couple of folders like "test" the Service would not start with spurious nonsensical message. No indicated of the real issue. And a range of other issues related to the Service not being able to start. A simple message indicating the actual reason could have cut down on at least two days of trying to work out what the heck was going on.

c)
Not being able to see the databases listed in Workbench. Even though the folders are there under "data" Workbench cannot see them.

The list goes on. Totally unacceptable for what is supposed to be a professional product. No issues like this at all with MSSQL.

Just not good enough Oracle.

Hello,
In tool "MySQL Installer GUI" is possible to set "Server Configuration Type". You can choose between Developer, Server and Dedicated. How to do it in Mysqlinstaller console?

For example:
MySQLInstallerConsole install server;5.7.16;X64:*:type=config;passwd=pass;openfirewall=true;serverid=1;enable_tcpip=true;port=3306;datadir="d:\database";[---> SERVERMODE=DEDICATED <---] -silent

Thank you for your help.

Installer hangs upgrading from 5.6.31 to 5.6.34 (5 replies)

Installer hangs upgrading from 5.6.31 to 5.6.34 at the "Check and Upgrade Database" after entering the root password and selecting the Check button.

Looking around I can see that the "MySQL56" service was stopped, and will not start. When trying to start the mysqld.exe executable from the command line with the same options as the service I could see that it was failing to start because it couldn't find the path "...\ProgramData\MySQL\MySQL Server 5.6\Uploads", which didn't exist.

I manually created the "Uploads" directory and was able to start the service and then the installation when from " NOT RESPONDING" to working normally again. And then I was able to finish the upgrade. (the first time the install failed, I stopped it, and it overwrote the mysql data. So I had to restore from a backup)

I always manually download the msi installer and execute it on my server (Windows 2012 R2) and this is the first time it was looking for this non-existant directory.

Do I need to create this "Uploads" folder on all my instances of MySQL before attempting anymore upgrades, or is this considered a bug?

MySQL Installer for Windows does not see 5.6.34 update (1 reply)

Hello all,

Successfully running MySQL Community Server 5.6.29 on Windows 10.
A while back I saw updates of the server, namely 5.6.34 but it looks like each time I check the Catalog, the installer tells me that there is no update available.

Am I missing something here?
Should I completely uninstall 5.6 and take this opportunity to install 5.7?

Any help would be warmly welcome.

Best regards

Philippe

5.6.34.0 Installer does not install MySQL 5.6.34.0 (no replies)

I downloaded the MySQL 5.6.34.0 installer from here (https://dev.mysql.com/downloads/windows/installer/5.6.html). It's named mysql-installer-web-community-5.6.34.0.msi.

When I run this, it shows me that MySQL 5.5.53 is installed. It does not, however, let me upgrade to 5.6.34 or offer to install 5.6.34 as a separate, side-by-side instance.

How do I get the 5.6.34 install to actually install that version of MySQL?

migrate databases from 5.5 to 5.6 locally on Windows (3 replies)

Hi, I was asked to upgrade an existing Mysql 5.5.34 to 5.6.33 on a Windows server.
For this I used the installer and ended up with 2 versions of MySQL server on the same machine.

I managed to "shutdown" the 5.5 version.
Now I'm left with an empty MySQL5.6 server. It shows only the default databases. Someone suggested to copy the data directory from the 5.5 dir to the 5.6 dir and run mysql_upgrade. Which I did.

When I run "show databases;" they're still not there.
What do I need to do to migrate my existing databases into 5.6??

Please help me out. I'm a relative newbie to MySQL

Michiel

WIndows 10, MySQL 5.7 or 8.0 fails to install (5 replies)

I have new desktop and laptop. I've tried to use the windows installer to install first v.8.0 then after a complete uninstall v.5.7. In both cases, the installer gets to the item "starting database..." and keeps popping up the apology pop-up window. I let them run for an about an hour, continually hitting enter to continue the installation. But to no avail. No success. Did I not wait long enough? How long should an installation take? 2 hours? more?

Any ideas on how to proceed? Yes, I am in the Administrator group on both of these boxes. Yes, I have lots of disk space available. Both boxes have 16GB of RAM.

unable to reconfigure MySQL 5.7 (no replies)

Hi,

I am running MySQL 5.7.17 x64 on Windows 2008 Server.
I have downloaded "mysql-installer-community-5.7.17.0.msi" to check my setup.
When I launch the installer, it requires to reconfigure "MySQL 5.7".
When I click "reconfigure" and follow the wizard until the "Apply server configuration" tab and click on "execute", reconfiguration hangs up on "adjusting windows service" and log ends as follow:

Beginning configuration step: Adjusting Windows service [if necessary]
Attempting to grant Network Service require filesystem permissions.
C:\ProgramData\MySQL\MySQL Server 5.7
C:\ProgramData\MySQL\MySQL Server 5.7
Ended configuration step: Adjusting Windows service [if necessary]

So it sounds I have a filesystem permission issue on:
C:\ProgramData\MySQL\MySQL Server 5.7

How can I solve this, can't find no clue in online doc.

Installer only showing Connector after attempting re-install (1 reply)

My initial attempt to install MySQL on Windows 10 did not seem to work properly - I was trying to add MySQL to PATH, but the MySQL server directory did not get properly added to C:\Program Files (x86)\MySQL.

So I decided to do a clean install by uninstalling all MySQL products and removing all the corresponding folders in:

%ProgramFiles%\MySQL
c:\Program Files (x86)\MySQL
%ProgramData%\MySQL

Note that uninstalling the connector was not working properly (this seems to be a known issue), so I manually deleted it from the Windows Registry.

Now that I try to re-install from a seemingly clean slate, the installer seems to remember me but only shows the MySQL Connector and none of the other products (e.g. Server).

I've tried everything that I can find online but I can't get the installer to work anymore, any help would be much appreciated.
